FRYEBURG — High school Nordic skiing has two separate events to decide New England’s best. Athletes qualify by age for either the Under-16 Championships (called U16’s, for 14 and 15 year olds) or the full Eastern High School Championships (called EHSC’s, for anyone in high school). The EHSC’s not only include New England States but New York and occasionally guest teams from Canada and the West.

As with any high school sport, age and experience are large factors in success, so it is typical that older juniors and seniors beat out the younger underclassman in qualifying for the EHSC’s. The system is designed for the younger kids to have their own opportunity to shine at U16’s. However, occasionally youth prevails and one qualifies for both championship events. Fryeburg Academy has had several individuals over the years that have accomplished this “double-up,” but it has never had two in the same year.
