I think golf needs a few more characters who march to different drummers. I’m not talking full-fledged Happy Gilmores, but players who aren’t robots and seem to have a genuine love of the game and are fan favorites.

Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, a Hall of Fame golfer whose antics on the greens where he would treat his putter as if he were in a duel with Zoro and would then holster his saber was one such character. Showing a little personality made him among the sport’s most popular players during a long professional career. Chi Chi died on Aug. 9. He was 88.
