In the mid-80s, we were living near Keene. For our February break, the second week of Vacation Week, we’d load up the kids and skis and come to Mount Washington Valley. One of the first alpine areas we tried was Jackson’s Black Mountain. It had a reputation for being a family-friendly mountain. With two children under 5, that’s what we needed.

The first time we went to Black, my son was 3 and had never downhill skied. The other family who came with us had a son about his age and experience. After signing them up for ski school lessons, the adults hit the slopes.
