“Home of the World’s Worst Weather,” Mount Washington is an iconic fixture of beauty for residents and visitors to the White Mountains. At 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is the tallest peak in the Northeast. Thousands hike it every year, mostly in summer, although many experienced climbers make the trek in winter, with the area's ice climbing schools and the Appalachian Mountain Club (466-2721; www.outdoors.org).
In addition to hiking, visitors in summer may reach the summit one of two mechanized ways: from Route 16 in Pinkham Notch, the 1861-built Mount Washington Auto Road (466-3988) offers guided shuttle rides and also opens the nearly eight-mile long “Road to the Sky” to private cars. The 1869-built Mount Washington Cog Railway (278-5404) offers rides from its Marshfield Base Station, located near Bretton Woods and accessed via Route 302.
