Mount Whiteface (4,020 feet) is a storied mountain. The 3.9-mile Blueberry Ledge Trail climbs from Ferncroft to a junction near the top. To the right, the true summit is 0.3 miles north on the Rollins Trail, to the left the McCrillis Trail begins and a short scramble leads to the south ledges of Mount Whiteface which have an outstanding view out over two intervales, the valley of the Bearcamp River and beyond.

Over the years, people have been tempted to attach memorial plaques to ledges in scenic spots such as the south ledges. Today, the forest service doesn’t allow it for obvious reasons, as the info person at the Conway ranger station said to me about increased public use: “It would look like graffiti.”
