8-3-2024 North Country Angling-top water lure

First bass caught with an on-a-top water lure brings smiles. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

The day broke with cloud cover from the previous night’s rainfall. It allowed the sleepy pre-teen to catch a few more winks. It allowed Grandpa to go out and load the canoe onto the jeep and load all of the necessary gear for a day of smallmouth bass fishing at “secret pond.”

While all of you are familiar with the trout pond that shall not be named, there is an area bass pond that shall not be named as well. Stories of big bass caught had intrigued the angler’s grandson for a couple of years. There was always discussion as to when there would be a trip to the secret pond.

The young angler had a grin from ear to ear! And that's what we encourage in children? To delight in the slow suffocation of fishes? We are crying about being overrun with people invading and degrading resources on the Saco, at Diana's Bath, while our invasive species does lethal damage to other life forms in THEIR homes and habitats? We reap what we sew and nothing epitomizes that quote as much as the cruelty and violence in a society coming full circle because we teach it, nurture it, encourage it. Teach kindness over killing. The world will benefit. www.fishfeel.org
