The 55th Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race took place on Saturday, June 20. It was a perfect day on the mountain. There was a slight breeze, blue skies, perfect temps and unlimited visibility. There were 1,049 finishers recorded, and that 1,049th runner was 95-year-old George Etzweiler of State College, Penn. I was lucky enough to meet George early in the morning when he collected his race number from me. He shook my hand, said it was great to be at the race again, and that he thought five years ago he wouldn't be here again. Amazing.

I walked most of the road except for the short downhill and flat section at the start and then through the finish line when another woman urged me to "run it in" with her. We had been playing leap frog for the last half mile and it was great to finish together. One of the highlights of the day was when a woman walking near me around mile 6 looked over at me and said, "This sucks!" I looked at her and said, "No! Turn around and walk backward for a minute. Look at that view. Look at where we are. This does not suck!" She had to agree, we laughed, and kept moving onward and upward.
