More than a year after a legal review shook North Conway Water Precinct to the core, leading commissioners to fire long-time superintendent Gary Chandler, a replacement has been selected.Commissioners voted unanimously this week to offer the job to David Bernier, 46, a Berlin native who currently supervises the public works department in Dartmouth, Mass.Bernier has admitted he has mixed feelings about the job, due to ongoing dissension in the community. "If the public was willing to put the past in the past and look forward to the future... I'd feel a lot more comfortable," he said. Yet he also has seen signs of hope. "I think it's coming around. A lot of issues are water over the dam," he said. "People just need to look forward into the future."His final words of encouragement: "Things will only get better."
