Last week’s Tele-Talk question — “What can we do individually, collectively and/or locally to combat climate change?” — received 28 responses. Some said going without meat, plastic and a fossil fuel-based economy will help fight climate change while others were skeptical about the science or the impact we can have to reversing it.

In 2006, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations released a report called “Livestock's Long Shadow.” This report names the livestock sector as one of the top two-three contributors to environmental degradation. Here we are 13 years later and we are talking about light bulbs and every other minor remedy except for the elephant in the room. At this late stage of environmental destruction we must act on a local as well as global scale. In the words of Greta Thunberg, 16-year-old vegan and environmental activist, "I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire. Because it is.” Do it for your children and grandchildren? The next time that you are in your local market, look for Beyond Meat burgers and sausage. In the freezer section you can find Gardein products. Stop making excuses for not doing your part in this crisis as it has never been easier. Christine Celella.
