This week, the Conway Zoning Board of Adjustment upheld a ruling by Assistant Building Inspector Jeremy Gibbs that the mural of baked goods atop Leavitt’s Country Bakery should be considered a sign and is out of compliance with the town zoning ordinance. The mural, created as a class project by Kennett High art students last spring, depicts a sun rising behind muffins and other treats sold by Leavitt’s, in a design meant to resemble the mountain landscape. Since Leavitt’s sells those items, Gibbs determined the mural constitutes a sign, even though no words appear on the mural. At the ZBA hearing appealing that decision, several parents said the mural was never intended as a sign and urged the board to preserve the work of the students. Gibbs told Leavitt’s co-owner Sean Young that he can seek a variance to allow the sign.
This week’s Tele-Talk question: Should Leavitt’s Country Bakery be granted a variance for the mural created by Kennett High School students?
