A newly arrived North Conway resident recently wrote to the editor, warning against skate parks in general and specifically the proposed Kevin Peare Memorial Skate Park, supporters of which have raised more than $50,000 and are seeking an OK from the state to build the park near Walmart. “One of the worst effects … will be noise pollution. The quiet of the local area will be shattered forever,” said the letter-writer. He also said the municipality where he lived before “ended up getting stuck with maintaining the park at significant cost.” His letter sparked several rebuttals, including from Earl Sires Jr., who wrote to say that neither of the proposed build sites for the park is in a residential area. Another responder cited research showing skateboarding to be beneficial to mental and physical health. Another pointed out there is currently nowhere for skateboarders to go in town.
