To the editor:As many of your readers know, I travel frequently to other parts of the world to work on justice and human rights reforms. At the moment I am in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a city with over 20 million people and the dubious honor of being the most polluted place on the planet. It is also a place which reminds one of the both the blessings and responsibilities we have as Americans. My work in developing nations offer daily reminders of how fortunate we are to freely choose how we are governed, and how important it is to thoughtfully exercise the right to vote. I was home for the deliberative sessions of the Conway town and school warrants but will be away on April 9, so I have voted by absentee ballot. I would like to share my thoughts on the importance of your vote for the office of the Conway Town Clerk. This year there are several solid candidates for our town clerk, an office peculiar to our New England form of government. While we all see the tax collection, record keeping and election supervision functions in the town clerk's office, there is also a less obvious but just as important facet to that job. The town clerk is the primary governmental linkage between the town and the state. This is an often overlooked role, but a person who understands that aspect of the job can help the town in a range of ways, and in turn save the taxpayers money. After carefully considering the candidates' talents, experience, knowledge and character, I decided that Raymond Leavitt Jr. was the best choice for job of Conway Town Clerk.
