To the editor:

Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” energizes his base, but what does it mean? When was America great? I asked a friend who is a staunch Republican, and he replied that “we were great right after World War II.” I pointed out that this period was preceded by 20 years of Democratic Party rule, followed by Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, then John F. Kennedy in 1960. Truly, this was a period when America was the superior military and aspirational leader in world affairs — we were seen as the “Shining City on the Hill.”
