On Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club's gravel ride last Sunday, riders pedal up dirt Clay Pond Road to its junction with Porter Road's dirt section on the right. (SALLY MCMURDO PHOTO)

FRYEBURG, Maine — Turning into the Maine Visitor Information Center off Route 302, just across the Maine/New Hampshire state line last Sunday, I saw bicycles everywhere. Where were they all going?

They were there for the Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club midsummer club rides. There were 54 riders in all, choosing from three ride options — two road rides and a gravel ride. I was there for the gravel ride.
