To the editor:

It will be a big mistake to open up the campgrounds too soon. They will be flooded with out-of-staters. There is nothing open for them to do but go to Wal-Mart, Shaw's and Hannaford.

Exactly well said by the mass guy. I also have a second home, splitting my time in NH and RI. The attitude must stop. I own a home in NH. Your income largely depends on tourists and second home owners so don't bite the hand that may have to feed you when this is all over. And all that food in the stores is not for you. More than half of it is purchased to support the tourists and second home owners. Economics majors you are not.

Dualrez

According to my drivers license and plate on my car, I am a Massachusetts resident. And there is nothing that I can do about that until the registry re-opens. It’s also not that easy to transfer plates on a lease.

As a longtime second home owner in the valley(20 years), I have made it my full time residence September-May for the past 4 years. It’s been my dream to do so for a very long time. After becoming an empty nester, my dream became reality. I enjoy the outdoors and all that the valley has to offer... skiing, hiking, fishing and biking. In fact, I grew up as a weekender in the valley. And with all of the recreational towns in NH, Maine and VT, I chose to come back to MWV with my own family so they could have the same experiences that I did as a kid.

I almost forgot to mention that I also work and volunteer in the valley...

That all being said, I get the struggle that locals are having with out of state plates pulling into grocery stores and pharmacies, etc... Along with the burden that it may place on hospitals and rescue services. It’s a pandemic and we are all scared. I’ve seen Mass plates in my neighborhood coming and going and not adhering to the quarantine guidelines of not only N.H., but Mass as well.

I’ve also seen N.H. plates pull into local businesses and not adhere to safe distancing guidelines, not wearing masks and coughing and sneezing... as I’m wearing a mask, glasses, hand sanitizer at my ready in the cart and waiting patiently for folks to make selections in the aisles before I make mine. (FYI... in 6 weeks I have only gone grocery shopping 4 times and order curbside pick up at small local businesses to support them).

But.... I’m not calling them out. I’m not flipping them the bird. I’m not dropping the f-bomb. I’m not giving dirty looks or pointing at their license plate as they drive by. Because that’s what they are doing to me when they see my Mass plate. And it doesn’t feel all that great, to be honest.

I’m not on here to rant about being a tax payer, “I’ve been coming to this valley for years” yada yada stuff. I am just hoping that people in the valley and beyond would just show a little bit of kindness and maybe restraint before lashing out at all of us “Massholes”. Don’t let a few bad apples spoil it for the rest of us. We’re not all that bad.
