In response to Jill Kornack of Brewster, Mass., and Stephen Losshut of Glen Head, N.Y., for the last time, the billboard on the cover of the Sun on April 1 was a joke.
I’m amused and concerned by Ms. Finkelstien’s response to some of the letters from, "Out-of-Staters."
I’m amused because she make allegations of the writers being smug, arrogant and paranoid but by the tone and tenor of her letter she appears to be displaying reflective behavior in that regard.
My concern is her lack of understanding about demographics, marketing, and economics when it comes to the overall fiscal health of the Valley.
Displaying a billboard saying in essence, “Go Home, You’re Not Welcome Here” was not the best idea I have ever seen in terms of marketing or community. You know what they say about things said in jest. For some it was actually frightening.
Both Losshut’s and Kornack’s concerns are very real and legitimate and need to be paid attention to.
They are probably representative of more visitors and out-of-staters than Finkelstein realizes. Plus, as a matter of factual reality, they are correct.
For better or worse, a very large portion of the Valley’s property is owned by and occupied by, “Out-of-Staters.” Beside the fact that they contribute to an overwhelming portion of the Valley’s tax revenue, they also are the ones that make it possible for the retailers and hospitality industry to thrive here, while also contributing to Village and School budgets.
Finally, it is their legal right to be here if they so choice.
Therefore, before you shout from your soapbox about being, “Neither wanted nor welcome!” you should consider that, “these people” could very well be your neighbors, and have the same civil, and legal rights, and protections that you have.
