For as long as I can remember, there has been a gravestone in the Stark Cemetery for “Gen. John Stark, 1740-1812,” adorned with a Revolutionary veteran's marker and a flag. Someone mentions it at every major anniversary of the American Revolution, including the current one. As most aficionados of New Hampshire’s colonial and early constitutional history know, however, Major General John Stark lies in his family cemetery in the north end of Manchester, near his home at the falls of the Merrimack.
Fritz Wetherbee, the host of “New Hampshire Crossroads,” was once prompted to comment on the Conway gravestone. He alluded to a Stark genealogist who assured him that Conway’s John Stark was from an entirely different clan. The only problem with that explanation is that the Starks buried in the Stark Cemetery on Stark Road are descendants of General Stark’s brother Samuel, rather than from a different branch of the family tree.
