CRAWFORD NOTCH — Ever get a case of the Willeys driving down through Crawford Notch on a dark and stormy night?

Two hundred years ago come Friday, Aug. 28, the thunderous skies opened and caused a torrent here that led to a cascading mudslide and flood waters to rise in the neighboring Saco River. In all, seven members of the farming and innkeeping Willey family and two of their farm workers were killed.
