In late 1989, the first year the Sun published, I happened to sit next to Nick Howe at Faye’s Diner in North Conway. I didn’t know him but knew of him. He was a nationally known ski writer and traveled with the U.S. Women’s Ski Team for 17 years. He covered two Olympics and was a lifelong friend of Tamara McKinney, American skiing legend and winner of 18 World Cup races.

At the time, we were looking for local columnists. We chatted, and I asked him if he’d consider writing for the paper.
