It’s been a bad couple of weeks. We lost a war. Signed a treaty that gives the enemy hundreds of billions of dollars in exchange for reopening Hormuz as it was before we attacked. And after a couple of months, there’ll probably be tolls for letting ships through the strait. We promised them that they could have ballistic missiles cause — hey — everyone should have ‘em. And maybe they’ll talk about getting rid of the enriched uranium they didn’t have when our president ripped up the Obama agreement in his first term.
We discovered that we taxpayers will pay $300 or $400 million for an East Wing that “wouldn’t cost the taxpayers a dime”. And the $15 million no-bid contract to paint the Reflecting Pool: Let’s just say that next time, I’ll paint it for a flat $10 million and do a better job. How about the hundreds of millions we are paying to fit out a new Air Force One, an incomplete payoff from Qatar for doing their foreign policy bidding that the president will take home when he leaves office like the centerpiece at a wedding reception.
Yea, no. George is a good writer, but this one loses me.
The sports and personal reflection parts are fine. Loons, tennis, sunsets, kids doing well — great. I’m all for finding joy where we can.
But the opening is not analysis. It is a pile of national political hot takes stated as if they are settled facts. Calling a preliminary Iran framework a “treaty” and declaring that we “lost a war” is commentary, not fact. Same with bouncing from foreign policy to federal spending to Maine politics and then landing on Messi and radishes.
I don’t object to optimism. I object to dressing up partisan framing as obvious truth and then smoothing it over with a nice ending.
