Each year the Super Bowl provides us with a snapshot of American culture. Look back over 60 years and the broadcasts do an excellent job of capturing our history. The patriotic opening ceremonies have been pretty consistent throughout. The sport itself — its violence, the prevalence of injury, the terminology of blitzes, traps, bombs, trenches — has a military flavor. Throw in the cool flyovers, the honor guards, America the Beautiful and the Star-Spangled Banner and you have a national celebration.

It’s the ads that tell the real story of our economy and what’s trending culturally. We clearly have a new national focus on 6-pack abs and computers doing our jobs. Having Serena Williams tell us about losing 35 pounds by shooting up a weight loss drug highlights our newest billion-dollar industry. Our other new mega-industry gave us insider ads. Do any regular folk really care that OpenAI is beginning to show ads on ChatGPT but Anthropic isn’t doing so on Claude?
