We sure are getting a lot of protection these days. Our prisons protect us from criminals by “taking them off the streets.” One N.H. state prison guard made $388,000 last year — $280,000 in overtime. It raises the question of whom we need protecting from.

In New Hampshire and around the country, we have “divisive concepts” laws vaguely restricting teachers from talking about negative aspects of American history or culture — stuff like slavery, murder and mistreatment of Native Americans, and discrimination against all sorts of minorities. The Smithsonian and other institutions have been instructed to hide evidence of ugliness. These steps protect our young and naive people from having their day ruined by finding out about the literal skeletons in our collective closet.
