The recent legislative session, which voted on the state budget, was a roller coaster, with uncertainty until the eleventh hour about whether it would pass. The governor had threatened to veto the budget without changes that were deal-breakers, including restoring benefits to first responders and reversing significant cuts to the Manchester school system.

In the House, the budget was opposed by a considerable number of Republicans who argued that “it goes down a path of tyranny and continues to fund higher education, which is essentially a funding revolution,” said Rep. Mike Belcher (R-Wakefield). Belcher declared that the budget created “an inevitable path toward tyranny” through unchecked government expansion. He and his band of Free Staters were concerned that the budget increased spending by approximately percent over the previous biennium.
