As a Jackson resident and parent, it has been disheartening to hear and read the reactions from the Conway School Board regarding Jackson considering sending our high schoolers to Fryeburg Academy. In a state with the motto “Live Free or Die” and a strong value of self-determination, it is troubling to see Conway attempt to unduly influence where the town of Jackson decides to send its high schoolers.

Press coverage from the Sun has amplified those attempting to bully Jackson into sending our kids to Kennett, most recently in the interview with Conway School Board member Mike DiGregorio. DiGregorio and others have accused the Jackson School Board of conflicts of interest because they have kids who are affected by this decision. Since when is having skin in the game a conflict of interest? Yes, there are families in Jackson fortunate enough to send our kids to Fryeburg (in full disclosure, we are one of those families, although our student will graduate before the new contract is effective). There are also many families in Jackson with kids who are not yet in high school who are hoping Fryeburg becomes an option for their children. Why should not all families in Jackson have the option for their kids to receive the outstanding education provided at Fryeburg Academy?
