SARGENT’S PURCHASE — The gust of 231 mph recorded by the staff of the then-2-year-old Mount Washington Observatory on the peak’s 6,288-foot summit on April 12, 1934, was a record that stood for 62 years until Tropical Cyclone Olivia hit Barrow Island, Australia, delivering a record gust of 253 mph on April 10, 1996.

But Mount Washington’s mark remains the highest gust directly measured by humans.
