TAMWORTH — Dr. Michael Whaland sure can keep a secret. Last week, he was named 2026 Superintendent of the Year by the New Hampshire School Administrators Association. The superintendent for SAU 13, which serves Freedom, Madison and Tamworth, knew for about six weeks that he was a finalist but kept it under his hat.

"This is really an SAU 13 award,” Whaland, who's been at the helm of the SAU since 2021, told the Sun on Tuesday. “It represents the hard work of my team at the SAU, the school boards, the teachers, students and our community. I’m deeply honored to accept this for all of them.”
