CONWAY — Although Gov. Chris Sununu has said campgrounds can open amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Washington Valley officials and many residents fear he’s creating an unnecessary risk in these uncertain times. One official, state Rep. Anita Burroughs (D-Bartlett), is circulating on online petition that had gathered more than 777 signatures by 3 p.m. Friday.

During a press conference Thursday, Gov. Sununu said he has been “listening to a lot of constituents” and admits “there has been a lot of concern” about the campgrounds opening. But he and other state leaders are continuing to craft a “guidance directive that would allow them to stay open” that could be unveiled as early as next week.

At what point are you going to deem it safe for a campground to reopen ? This is a huge loss to local small business. There are less than 1800 cases of Covid state wide. You say that opening the campground will attract out of state visitors. Why not at least allow those of us who live in NH to use the campgrounds with the appropriate precautions. This is another case of the nanny state stepping in and telling us what to do rather than using our own judgement and applying common sense.

This governor is a joke. He mentions southern NH has more cases because of mass residents going there to shop. Opening up campgrounds is the worst idea ever. Today alone I saw 40 mass plates filled with families. Where do they go shopping not in mass. We are going to see numbers go up and that time will be to late. He didn’t protect the NH citizens. He does NOT CARE!!!!!

I suppose that many are ready to get out of Dodge and go camping or boating. I can see boating but camping would have to be done very carefully and people would really have to cooperate with the campground owners. I'm not sure I'd want to go in an official campground right now, but we're I do go, there is generally no one around. Very isolated and relaxing. Just hope everyone uses their heads and stay safe.

Believe it or not, there are hardly any folks at the campgrounds at the beginning of the season. It's still pretty cold, especially at night. But seasonal campers come, get set up and enjoy the isolation before the summer vacation folks arrive. Even then, it really isn't until July 4th that the campground gets crowded. And yes, we want everyone to use precautions, to be safe, to keep things clean and sanitized. The campground owners are very responsible people. They want the best for everyone, who come to enjoy their time in a safe and sanitized setting. As I said before, no matter where you go, there will be folks who aren't as concerned. As seasonal campers we've already been discussing safe ways to be able to be in our summer homes.

Slashing tires on out-of-state vehicles?

I would hope the average area resident might realize that:

1) There are areas in NH itself that are local hot spots for the virus, so lashing and slashing tires on out-of-state vehicles might not do the job.

2) Slashing the tires on any vehicle, no matter where it is registered, will ENSURE that the operator will indeed have to spend MORE time in the area and interact with MORE local folks than they would if a concerned person simply left a note.

Hopefully the local residents are more thoughtful than they are being given credit for in this article.

I will not repeat the logic of my last letter on this matter except to once again ask: why are you singling out campers, especially seasonal campers who have homes up there? why are you not addressing yourself to people who have second homes and even as we speak are flooding to them? I understand your concern with people coming and going at campgrounds right now I truly do. This is not the time for that..

But tell me, what is the difference between me coming to my camper that I live in, that's my home, for 7 months a year and someone coming to their summer home if we behave responsibly?

But the main part of my objection to this article is your tacit acceptance of the fact that people from out of state might have damage done to their cars? why in the world would you put that thought out there? what did you hope to accomplish?as an elected state representative you should be ashamed of yourself. All your actions are doing is inserting a divide between people at the very time we should all be working together. perhaps you might think about that.

at a camp ground. Are those going to be closed?

As someone who camps for the season in NH, I understand the concerns. We are all trying to stay safe and maintain social distancing. I live in NH and camp for the summer. It is my summer home. Many folks have condo's or camps, who also come from NH and other States to their summer properties. You can't stop everyone from coming to Conway. My hope is that we will all continue to practice what we are practicing now, wherever we are. Seasonal campers are self contained, everything is inside their summer homes. We have thought about others coming, who only stay for the weekend. We have thought about kids on the playground. There are safeguards we can put into place, like closing the playground but allow children to ride their bikes or play at the campsite. We will wear face masks to go to the grocery store, like we do in our winter homes. Everyone is concerned about opening back up. We are being careful. I'm sure local businesses, who are currently serving local residents will welcome more customers, while still being safe and planful regarding opening things up a bit. Most people are being careful and making plans to keep everyone safe. Small businesses are just like everyone else, needing to take care of their families. I don't think opening campgrounds, with safeguards in place, following the Presidents guidelines for each phase of reopening America, is unreasonable.

On Jan. 22, President Donald Trump stated : "We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It's going to be just fine.

So don't worry - be happy!
