PORTER, Maine — About 60 residents at a meeting last month complained about rampant crime and drug abuse in the town of Porter, Maine, which has a population of about 1,600. After the meeting, which was held June 11, state Sen. Jim Libby (R-Standish) said local officials should be given more authority and district prosecutors should stop overlooking related drug crimes.

The informal meeting focused on possible solutions to public safety concerns, including the creation of a neighborhood watch program. Some residents even questioned whether they had the legal right to shoot intruders amid a rise in break-ins. Other issues raised included peeping Toms, unattended fires and reports of baggies containing drugs and needles being discarded around town.
