CRAWFORD’S PURCHASE — After White Mountain National Forest Pemigewasset District Ranger Brooke Brown gave her approval April 4 to the Appalachian Mountain Club’s proposal to create a helicopter landing site near the Cog Base Road, a Freedom of Information request uncovered close to a dozen citizen comments objecting to the plan.

The landing site is some 5 miles from Route 302 and is an extension of the AMC Huts/Pinkham Notch Visitor Center permit, under which the Boston-based non-profit operates seven huts plus the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center inside the almost 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest.

The uber-purity of the Whites has given us relatively poor huts because the AMC has a monopoly on those, while imposing knee and back injuries on the hut-people. Can you believe the 20 pound pack frames that are still used? Here, the AMC is making an effort to save lives, which should be non-controversial. What, you'd rather have people die than have a stray chopper compete with routine road roar? Check out the huts, hostels, hotels and eateries in the Alps of Europe. Much better. We could do better. Either let the AMC innovate, or open this potential market to people who can see better options for all concerned.
