FRANCONIA — Yours truly headed over on Friday, Jan. 19, to the New England Ski Museum in Franconia Notch with friends Martha and director emeritus Jeff Leich for the museum’s presentation of this year’s “Spirit of Skiing Award” to the museum’s ski historian, esteemed ski history author E. John B. Allen, 90, of Rumney.

It was a wonderful salute to John and his wife, Heidi. As NESM President Bo Adams noted in presenting the award, it is given to the person who throughout their lives exemplifies what late Dartmouth ski coach Otto Schniebs once said, that “Skiing is not just a sport; it's a way of life.” Past recipients from our area have included 1972 Olympian Tyler Palmer, Stan Judge and the late Herert Schneider and Phil Gravink.
