CONWAY — The countdown is on for the nation’s 250th, which we have all by now learned is called a semiquincentennial, derived from Latin and meaning “half of a 500th anniversary. But we’ve also heard it called “sestercentennial” (meaning “two and a half centuries”); or even “quarter-millennium,” which simply means “a quarter of 1,000 years.”

So, 250 years since July 4, 1776, and only 750 years to go before we celebrate the millennium of our country’s founding — if our guardrails of democracy get us there. We’ll have a roundup of the valley’s local celebrations next week.
