The Chinook Exhibit at the Tamworth History Center is a beautiful homage to one of Tamworth's heroes who never wrote a book, became a politician or uttered a single word.
Sled dog Chinook was bred and owned by Arthur Treadwell Walden (1871-1947) of Wonalancet. Walden, an American Klondike Gold Rush adventurer, author and dog driver, was a participant in the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Chinook was his lead dog. Chinook became the progenitor of the Chinook breed of dogs. The first floor is devoted to Chinook and Arthur Walden, displaying artifacts, pictures, letters and contemporary newspaper articles. The exhibit includes an enormous freight sled that transported essential supplies for the Byrd expedition. Be sure to visit the stunning statue of Chinook on the front lawn, designed by Tamworth artist and sculptor Andrea Kennett.
