January has been an up and down month with brutally cold temperatures and then the ice storm. This is the type of weather we see starving wildlife because of the icy crust on top of the snow. Barred owls and red-tailed hawks and bobcats may be impacted in particular. If you see an owl or hawk on the ground, you can assume it is injured or starving. Call Elaine Conners Center for Wildlife at (603) 367-WILD (9453). Bobcats may be spotted, too, but this is breeding season for them so they are apt to be more readily visable. But they can also be starving. The ice on top of the snow creates problems for predators which need rodents and prey to survive.
The Madison board of selectmen and the advisory budget committee will hold a public budget hearing for public input on the proposed 2018 budget and warrant articles on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the town hall lower level meeting room.
