As I scanned my holiday-laden living room, I felt the coziness of Christmas surround me like a warm blanket. Looking at old decorations imbued with memories, I found myself reflecting on Christmases past.

This moment of nostalgia led me to think of two recent experiences: the M&D production of A Christmas Carol and a Hallmark updated movie version of the same story. Both adaptations reminded me of the enduring themes and lessons in Charles Dickens’ classic, first published on Dec. 19, 1843. Notably, the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve, reflecting its immediate popularity and impact. This made me wonder what inspired Dickens to write such a universally loved and lasting story.
