Today is Aug. 7, and even in this extraordinary heat wave, there are daily hints that the season is slipping by. I heard this week that in Atlanta, Ga., school started last Monday. There’s something unnatural and downright wrong about that, in my view. School should never start before Labor Day.

Midsommar is a national holiday celebrated in the Norse countries, especially Sweden, right around June 21, technically the half way point of Solar Summer. The sun then is as far north as it will ever get, and thus daylight stretches to as much as two-thirds of the day in some parts of the world, and for residents of those northern countries, the longest day is worthy of celebration.
