MADISON — The Madison Farmers Market opened its inaugural season last Sunday, and has weekly markets planned through Oct. 11 at Burke Field on Village Road.
The market will be open Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission is free, vendors do not pay a fee to participate, and the market is operated entirely by volunteers.
Vendors are expected to include Gill N Leaf, Children Unlimited Inc., Happy Tails To You, Kathy Roy's Garden, Garden of Freedom, Homemade on High Street, Offbeat Baking Co., Kairos Homestead, Mountain Tails Bakery and Mary's Garden Preserves. Local pianist Noah Poirier, a Mountain Top Music student, will perform throughout the afternoon.
Beginning July 19, instructor Katherine Meeks will lead a pay-what-you-can, all-ages yoga class at 4 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and water and register in advance through the Madison Farmers Market Facebook page.
Organizers said the market is still accepting applications from farmers, food producers, artists, craftspeople, non-profits, students and musicians. They are especially seeking musicians interested in busking during August.
The market is a volunteer-run program of Madison Recreation. Volunteers are also being sought to staff the welcome table, assist visitors and help manage recycling and compost collection.
The market is partnering with the Madison Food Pantry to accept donations of nonperishable food from visitors and fresh produce from vendors. The market does not currently accept SNAP or other government nutrition benefits.
Because cellular service at the site is limited, organizers encourage visitors to bring cash. Shoppers are also asked to bring reusable bags, as single-use plastic bags will not be available. Parking is available at Burke Field.
