My 1974 Mercury Comet has pretty simple controls. Lights are a round knob you pull; below it is the wiper knob with flat edges you turn; the radio has a knob on the left for on/off and volume and a knob on the right for tuning with push buttons between for pre-set stations (AM only, and there aren’t five AM stations broadcasting in the valley but there is at least one).

Climate controls are a vertical slide lever for defrost or heat. To the left of that is a similar lever for temperature, and to the left of that is a switch for off, low, medium and high fan settings. I drove the car yesterday, and I can picture these simple controls as I type this. So what? you might ask.
