Cruise control on newer cars is nearly a universal feature, but its inspiration is a fascinating story.

According to the National Inventors Hall of Fame website, inventor, Ralph Teetor was a frequent passenger in friend and patent attorney, Harry Lindsey’s car. Lindsey had a tendency to vary his speed with the cadence of his conversation. and Teetor found that unsettling, so in 1936, he began working on a device to help the car hold a steady speed.
