The common assumption among consumers of used cars is that dealers get inventory from wholesale auctions, and that’s frequently true. Wholesale, dealer-only auctions are the quickest way for dealers to liquidate unwanted stock and also, the most efficient way to locate vehicles to sell. We, in the North Country, are at a bit of a disadvantage regarding auto auctions, most are hours away and positioned in populace centers to take advantage of volume, leaving us with logistical considerations that can be difficult to overcome. Smaller auto auction venues exist in outlying areas, but the selection is limited, and the quality can be questionable.
We often get asked about auto auctions by people who have interesting ideas regarding how they work. Most assume vehicles are plentiful with rows of gleaming reconditioned cars and trucks lined up waiting to be sold for ridiculously low prices. I get asked regularly to take along a potential buyer or friend so they can take advantage of this Valhalla of used car selection and value but, for a variety of reasons this is not possible, including the fact that I wouldn’t be in business long if everyone took advantage of wholesale pricing through my generosity.
