Cars have become much more than just a mode of transportation. People read in them, apply makeup, eat, drink, work, and even sleep in cars — usually while parked but not always.

Americans adopted a much broader definition of car culture than some other societies. For a long time, European automakers, who prided themselves on interactive driving, balked at installing cup holders, insisting instead that driving demands attention and focus — which it does.
