CONWAY — M&D Playhouse will be holding auditions for "The Last Romance" by Joe DiPietro, as directed by Mary Bastoni, at 1857 White Mountain Highway in North Conway on Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
DiPietro’s bittersweet romantic comedy "The Last Romance" centers on widower Ralph who once had ambitions to be an opera singer but got married instead. He lives with his slightly younger sister Rose — a possessive, relentless, bitter nag who is determined not to let him out of her sight.
When Ralph spots the attractive, white-haired Carol at the local dog park, Ralph flirts, plays teasing games with Carol, and works hard to establish a relationship. Impressed with his love of opera, she invites him to accompany her on a trip to Italy and the fabled La Scala opera house. Needless to say, Rose is not pleased with this plan.
There are two male roles and two female roles available. Auditions will consist of a cold reading from the script.
Ralph Bellini (Lead): Male, 60-80 to play 80s, full of life, charming, bit of a tease, charmer, struggling with the insecurities of aging, and his faltering health; non-singing role.
Carol Reynolds (Lead): Female, 60-75 to play 70s, attractive, put-together, proper and very well-dressed, the focus of Ralph’s attraction, and while she may be lonely, she is reticent to engage him because of her fear; will be working with a live, small dog; non-singing role.
Rose Tagliatelle (Lead): Female, 60-75 to play 70s, Ralph’s sister, a tough cookie, she’s protective of Ralph, and very worried about his health, threatened by Carol’s appearance, and does whatever she can to break them up. Rose has given up on love, and accepts what her life will be.
Young Ralph Bellini (Supporting): Male, 18-25 to play late teens-early 20s, young with a beautiful singing voice; full of hope and promise; baritone, with some classical training, will sing small sections of Italian arias throughout the show, and interact minimally, with his “older” self.
Performance dates for "The Last Romance" are Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 28, through Oct. 14.
