Labor Day is a turning point in the gardening year, when summer’s work gives way to fall chores.

The harvest is at floodtide, tomatoes, corn, herbs and cabbages, with potatoes to be dug and onions to pull. Yet the seasons are clearly in transition, and the light ends earlier by the day. Dusk arrives at 7 p.m., and it is full dark by 8.
