Since ancient times, summer’s “dog days” have been synonymous with sultry weather during 40 days, July 3-Aug. 11, coinciding with the rise and fall of the star system Sirius, in conjunction with the sun. And August has delivered a classic version, with unrelenting sun and heat. Many areas of the garden have just been hanging on, with occasional showers barely settling the dust.

Despite the arid conditions, the herb garden has continued to shine, and many of its occupants find the dog days of August just to their liking. With regular irrigation, the thyme and oregano are a mass of purple blooms, awash with fragrance and insect activity. The dill is in full head, and the parsley, with its deep taproot, is thriving.
