(Editor's note: Paul Kirsch of Madison attend the International Biathlon World Cup races at Soldier Hollow in Utah as a race volunteer from March 8-10. He had an opportunity to catch up three-time Olympian Sean Doherty of Center Conway for an interview. Here are some of Paul's insights.)

Biathlon may be the most exciting sport to watch that you’ve never heard of. Competitors race multiple 2- to 3-kilometer loops on skis and at the end of the loops, they stop at a shooting range with targets set up 50 meters away. They will shoot from either a standing position, for targets that are 4.5 inches wide, or a prone position where the athletes lay on their stomachs, for targets that are 1.8 inches wide.
