The gentle way up Doubletop Mountain

Last week, I wrote about climbing Mount Katahdin (5,268 feet) in Maine's Baxter State Park. Six of us spent three nights at Baxter's Kidney Pond Campground, climbing Katahdin on Friday, Sept. 25. The next day, we climbed Doubletop Mountain (3,489 feet), also located in the park.

I have wanted to climb the striking Doubletop Mountain since 1970, when — as a hiking leader at a camp — I led a group of campers up the nearby Hunt Trail on Mount Katahdin. The view of the striking twin-summited Doubletop, located just a few miles to the northwest, was most dramatic from the valley floor.
