The lowly minivan was derided as the symbol of maturity and family responsibility in my young adult years. These soccer mom mobiles were looked down upon by teens. If seen riding or worse, driving one, they generally ducked below the window sill to avoid stares. But adulthood eventually catches up.

We had a GMC Safari for a time as our family transport. Boring as it was capable, the Safari had AWD, third-row seating, a reliable V6 engine with enough oomph to pull a trailer and reasonable efficiency. Yes, it was a minivan but not really (he says to cushion his car guy sensibility). It was more midsize and conventionally styled than the typically defined minivan of the time, and I sparred with my buddy Carl when comparing it with his choice of an Explorer for family hauler duty. Aside from the van stigma, my Safari was a better value and just as capable if not more so with added cargo space and seating, though arguably not as cool.
