I felt my skis gliding over powdery snow, with a whisper-quiet shush. The tips were barely visible in the unbroken snow. I was in skier’s heaven. Everything was fluid motion and soft sounds. The woods were peaceful and beautiful. The sun was setting in the west and turning the sky a vivid pink. It was my first ski of the 2016-17 season.

I’m looking forward to my first ski this winter. I can’t wait to re-experience those seasonal sensations of skis gliding, snow falling, brisk air and working muscles. The smell of wet wool and wood smoke will tell me winter’s here. The taste and warmth of hot cocoa after will celebrate a good ski.
