Henry Thoreau mentioned that the view of a rocky summit is often better than the view from it. At the time he was referring to Mount Monadnock in southern New Hampshire, not Mount Eastman (2,939 feet) in North Chatham, Maine. Yet it applies there, too. Its view of the rocky dome of South Baldface (3,570 feet) less than a mile away is striking. There is something elemental about gazing across at a bare rock mountain.

Recently I headed north on Route 113 from Fryeburg, Maine, with the intention of climbing Eastman Mountain. In about 18 miles from Fryeburg I turned right into the Baldface Circle Trail parking lot.
