My friend Donna Atkins had not done Iron Mountain in Jackson for many years, so last Saturday we decided to go do it. As we drove north into Jackson on Route 16 at about 9:30 a.m., I wondered if the small trail parking lot that holds only a half dozen cars at the end of Iron Mountain Road would be full on a busy Saturday and we would have to park at an overflow lot 0.2 miles down the road below it.
The mountain’s popularity was increasing. Today, Iron Mountain is back on the official 52 with a View list. It was taken off the list in 2020 because of the old rutted lower section of the trail. In 2021, the lower trail was reconstructed by the U.S. Forest Service, the AMC and the White Mountain Trail Collective. In 2025, Iron Mountain was reinstated on the 52 with a View list.
