It has been a busy week in the valley for me and I thought I’d just describe a few experiences hiking on Mount Washington since I first climbed it in 1966. It is one of those subjects that every hiker, climber, skier, ranger or guide who has stepped on the mountain could write about.

I got a job at AMC Pinkham Notch Camp in the early spring of 1966 and stayed through the summer on construction crew in the high huts, and for the next two summers as well. I would go back in the mid-70s for a couple years and saw many changes in the huts between those time periods in the outlook on conservation, gender employment and backcountry values.
